Birch Creek Ranch was started by Leilani and Alan Kingsbury from an Agricultural Land Disposal Parcel acquired in 1982. The farm consists of ~100 acres of hayfields, commercial greenhouses focusing on annual bedding plant production, and 2 acres of berry crops. Talkeetna Grown CSA established vegetable production for a 30+ member CSA, farm stand sales and direct restaurant sales using pimarily organic methods. We are trying to upgrade greenhouse heating and farm energy systems to be more efficient and reduce costly fuel oil consumption which is the greatest challenge to sustainability of the farm. We are expanding vegetable production and sales with CSA shares, and restaurant sales during the busy local tourism season. We are making most compost used on farm from reject hay, garden waste and local food wastes.

The greenhouse produces vegetable starts and both retail and wholesale annual and perennial flowers. We struggle to put up 100 acres of hay each year between Jun 20 and July 20 for retail sale and some for our one horse. This year will be fourth year that Talkeetna Grown CSA will work the gardens the new high tunnels for vegetable shares as we transition to all organic growing methods. We have over two acres in berry production.
All growing methods are in use on the farm. Talkeetna Grown CSA is using all organic methods for vegetable production but is not certified. We use plastic mulch to warm the soil and aid in weed control, and grow in several low and high tunnels to offer products such as cucumbers, squash, and even pumkins.
Where to Buy our Products
We are offering CSA shares this season, as well as selling to local restaurants. Twister Creek Restaurant, Wildflower Café and Flying Squirrel Bakery Café buy in-season veggies. We hope to have more customers in 2013 and offer at least two farmstands locally each week during peak season.
Special veggie stands will be announced when crops are abundant.
CSA - Shares available, announcements/ contracts will be available March 15, 2013.
