Birch Creek Ranch and Talkeetna Grown CSA

Birch Creek Ranch & Talkeetna Grown CSA
HC 89 Box 8100
Talkeetna, AK 99676

Birch Creek Ranch was started by Leilani and Alan Kingsbury from an Agricultural Land Disposal Parcel acquired in 1982. The farm consists of ~100 acres of hayfields, commercial greenhouses focusing on annual bedding plant production, and 2 acres of berry crops. Talkeetna Grown CSA established vegetable production for a 35+ member CSA, farm stand sales and direct restaurant sales using pimarily organic methods.  We are striving to achieve the elusive goal of sustainability of the farm, and a profit too.  We are continuing to expand vegetable production and sales with CSA shares, restaurant sales, and farmers markets.  We are making most compost used on farm from hay and brewery grains in addition to garden and local food wastes.

The greenhouse produces vegetable starts and both retail and wholesale annual and perennial flowers. We struggle to put up 100 acres of hay each year between Jun 20 and July 20 for retail sale and some for our one horse. This year will be the sixth year that Talkeetna Grown CSA will work the gardens and high tunnels for vegetable shares as we transition to all organic growing methods. We also have over two acres in berry production.

Growing Methods
All growing methods are in use on the farm. Talkeetna Grown CSA is using all organic methods for vegetable production but is not certified.  We use plastic mulch to warm the soil and aid in weed control.  We have several low and high tunnels to offer products such as cucumbers, squash, and even pumkins and corn.

Where to Buy our Products
We are offering CSA shares this season, as well as selling to local restaurants. Twister Creek Restaurant, Wildflower Café and Flying Squirrel Bakery Café buy in-season veggies. We hope to have more customers in 2015 and offer at least two farmstands locally each week during peak season.  We host one farm stand each week at the Northern Susitna Institute campus at mile 14 of the Talkeetna Spur road, participate in the Willow Farmers Market on Fridays, and have been hosting a farm stand at the Alaska Native Medical Center campus on Wednesdays.
